DIR-3 KYC Filing for Directors

Every DIN holder has to file KYC with the MCA once a year. Miss it and the DIN switches off on 1 October, taking every other filing with it.

What happens if you miss it

This is the cheapest compliance in the Companies Act and the one most often forgotten, because nothing prompts you. There is no government fee at all if you file by 30 September. Miss the date and it costs Rs 5,000 to reactivate.

The real cost is not the Rs 5,000. On 1 October the MCA system automatically marks every non-compliant DIN as Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC. A deactivated DIN cannot sign anything on the MCA portal, so your company cannot file its annual return, its financial statements, or any form needing that director's signature — and those have their own late fees running per day while you sort the DIN out.

One director forgetting a free form can therefore stall the whole company's filing calendar. That is the part people do not see coming.

If nothing in your KYC details has changed since last year, the simpler web-based version applies. If your mobile, email or address has changed, the full e-form is required, and that needs a fresh DSC and professional certification.

Dates, fees and form numbers on this page were checked on 5 September 2026. Government timelines change; if you are reading this much later, confirm with us before you rely on it.

What we need from you

  • DIN and the director's PAN and Aadhaar
  • Personal mobile number and email — these get OTP-verified during filing, so they must be ones you can access right now
  • A valid Class 3 DSC in the director's own name. An expired DSC is the single most common reason a filing stalls on the last day
  • Proof of present residential address if it has changed since the last filing

Common questions

Yes. The obligation attaches to the DIN, not to the company's activity. Dormant companies and directors of companies that never began operations are caught by it exactly the same way.

No. One filing per person, not per company. The KYC is about you as a DIN holder.

Yes, by filing the same form with the Rs 5,000 fee. Reactivation is usually quick once filed. The bigger job is often the pile-up of company filings that could not be signed in the meantime.

Yes, this is one you genuinely can do alone if your details are unchanged and your DSC is valid. We are worth involving when the DSC has expired, details have changed, or the DIN is already deactivated and other filings are now overdue behind it.
