Can I just stop filing GST returns?

No. Returns remain due and late fees accrue per day per return until the registration is formally cancelled.

Is a final return needed after cancellation?

Yes. A final return is due after cancellation, and missing it leaves the matter open even though the registration has ended.

Can I cancel with pending returns?

Pending returns generally have to be filed before cancellation is accepted, so clearing them is part of the process.

Nobody reminds you that a certificate is about to expire. The portal finds out for you, usually on the day something is due.

Why this is worth doing today rather than later

A digital signature is issued for a fixed period — commonly one, two or three years — and on the day after it ends it simply stops working. There is no warning email, no grace period, and no way to extend an expired certificate. You buy a new one.

The cost of that is not the certificate. It is discovering it at the moment you needed to file a return, submit a tender, or sign a form with a statutory deadline. We see this most often in the last week of a filing season and in the hours before a tender closes, which are exactly the times when a same-day replacement is hardest to arrange.

Checking takes two minutes. Do it now, write the date somewhere you will see it, and set a reminder for a month before.

Through the token's own utility

Every token brand ships a management utility that lists the certificates on the device with their validity dates. This is the most reliable method because it reads the token directly.

Through Windows certificate manager

With the token plugged in, the certificate appears in the Windows certificate store under personal certificates, with its issue and expiry dates and its serial number. Useful when you cannot find the vendor utility.

Through the portal you use it on

Most government portals show the registered certificate's expiry against your profile. This has the advantage of confirming both the expiry and that the certificate is still correctly registered.

Write the date down where you will actually see it

The check is easy; remembering is the hard part. Put it in the same calendar as your filing deadlines rather than in a note you will not open again.

Renew about a month early if you bid or file regularly

Renewing early does not waste time — you avoid the scenario where a deadline and an expiry land in the same week. For active contractors this is the single cheapest piece of insurance available.

One honest warning about other guides. A lot of pages on this topic tell you to download a driver from a link they host, or to turn off your antivirus, or to install something that "fixes all DSC problems". Do not. A crypto token driver should come from the token vendor or the certifying authority who issued your certificate, and nothing else should be touching a device that holds your legal signature. If you are not sure which vendor made your token, ask us and we will tell you from the token itself.

Not extended, no. A fresh certificate is issued, with fresh KYC. Practically it is the same process as buying one, which is why doing it before expiry rather than after is worth the small effort.

If you use it regularly, two or three years. It costs less per year and, more usefully, it removes two or three of these expiry moments from your life.
