DSC for NSWS and Startup India
The National Single Window System pulls central and state approvals into one place. Applications submitted through it are signed, and that means a Class 3 certificate.
One window, many approvals
NSWS exists so a business does not have to visit a dozen departments separately for approvals, licences and clearances. It routes an application to whichever central and state authorities need to see it. Startup India and DPIIT recognition sit in the same ecosystem.
Because a single submission can reach several authorities, what you sign there carries further than a form on one department's portal. The certificate needs to be in the name of whoever is authorised to bind the business — typically a director in a company, a designated partner in an LLP, or the proprietor.
Founders often reach this stage having just incorporated, and already hold a certificate from the incorporation process. That one usually works here too. Check before buying a second.
How it works and how fast
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Tell us the portal | We confirm individual or organisation, and whether encryption is needed too |
| 2. Documents | PAN, Aadhaar, photo, email and mobile; organisation certificates also need entity proof and an authorisation letter |
| 3. Video KYC | A two-minute recorded verification, required by the certifying authority |
| 4. Issue | Usually the same day, often within about two hours |
| 5. Token | Loaded onto a USB crypto token, collected in Bhopal or couriered anywhere in India |
The certificate is not tied to a portal. One Class 3 certificate in the right name works across all of them — what is portal-specific is the registration step, which you do once per portal against the same certificate.
What goes wrong
- Buying a second certificate unnecessarily. The DSC used for incorporation is often the same one you need here. Check first.
- Certificate in the wrong person's name. It must be someone authorised to bind the business.
- Expired incorporation-era certificate. If the company was formed two or three years ago, the original certificate may have lapsed.
- Assuming DPIIT recognition is automatic. It is an application with eligibility conditions, and the signature is only the submission step.
