A certificate that worked for years stops the week after a new laptop or a Windows update. The certificate is almost never the thing that changed.

Why this happens so consistently

Government portals in India were built over many years, and some of the signing components they rely on are older than the operating system you are now running them on. Windows 11 is stricter about drivers and about what a browser may talk to, and browsers have moved on from the plugin technology several portals were originally designed around.

The result is a predictable pattern. New laptop, or a feature update lands, and suddenly the token is invisible or the portal's signing step does nothing at all. Nothing is wrong with the certificate — the layer between it and the browser has changed underneath it.

This matters most if you bid on tenders, because the day you discover it tends to be the day a tender closes. If you have just changed machines, test your signature on the portal before you need it, not when you need it.

What to work through

Install the current driver, not the one that came with the token

The disc or download from when you bought it may predate Windows 11. Get the latest version from the token vendor or your certifying authority.

Uninstall cleanly before reinstalling

Remove the old middleware, restart, then install. Layering a new driver on a broken one leaves the broken parts behind and produces symptoms that look like new problems.

Check what the portal actually needs

Some portals still expect specific components or a particular browser. The portal's own help page is the authority here, and it is worth reading before changing anything on your machine.

Run the browser as administrator once

Some signing components need elevated permission the first time they register themselves. If signing fails silently with no error at all, this is worth trying.

Check whether antivirus is blocking the signing helper

Local signing helpers behave in ways security software finds suspicious. If you see it being blocked, allow that specific application — do not disable your antivirus, whatever any guide tells you.

Keep one machine that works

For anyone who bids regularly, this is the practical answer. A machine you do not upgrade casually, where the signing setup is known to work, is worth more than any troubleshooting guide on the day a tender closes.

One honest warning about other guides. A lot of pages on this topic tell you to download a driver from a link they host, or to turn off your antivirus, or to install something that "fixes all DSC problems". Do not. A crypto token driver should come from the token vendor or the certifying authority who issued your certificate, and nothing else should be touching a device that holds your legal signature. If you are not sure which vendor made your token, ask us and we will tell you from the token itself.
