Can I just stop filing GST returns?

No. Returns remain due and late fees accrue per day per return until the registration is formally cancelled.

Is a final return needed after cancellation?

Yes. A final return is due after cancellation, and missing it leaves the matter open even though the registration has ended.

Can I cancel with pending returns?

Pending returns generally have to be filed before cancellation is accepted, so clearing them is part of the process.

emSigner Not Working on the GST Portal

The GST portal does not talk to your token directly. It talks to a small program running on your own computer, and when signing fails, that program is usually why.

What emSigner actually is

Browsers are not allowed to reach into your USB token — that would be a serious security hole. So the GST portal uses a helper application that runs on your machine, reads the token locally, and hands the signature back to the browser page.

That design explains every common failure. If the helper is not running, the page has nothing to talk to. If the browser will not trust the local connection, the conversation is refused. If something else is using the same local port, the helper cannot listen on it. The error the portal shows is usually generic and unhelpful, but the cause is nearly always one of those three.

This also means the problem is on your computer, not with your certificate or with the GST portal. That is good news — it is fixable without buying anything.

Check the helper is actually running

It has to be started and left running while you sign, and it usually sits in the system tray. If you closed it or it never started after a restart, nothing else will work until it is running. Starting it as administrator resolves a good share of cases.

Open the local connection in a browser tab once, and accept the warning

The helper listens on a local address, commonly on port 1585. Your browser blocks it as untrusted until you visit it once and accept. Until you do, every signing attempt fails with a connection error. This one step fixes more of these than everything else combined.

Check nothing else is using that port

Other local applications occasionally claim the same port. If the helper reports it cannot start, this is usually why.

Try a different browser

If it works in one and not another, the problem is that browser's trust settings rather than the helper. That narrows it immediately.

Confirm the DSC is registered on the GST portal against the right person

Registration is per authorised signatory. A certificate that was never registered, or registered against a different signatory, will fail at signing no matter how healthy the helper is.

Check the certificate has not expired

Obvious, and still worth checking early. An expired certificate produces confusing errors that look like software faults.

One honest warning about other guides. A lot of pages on this topic tell you to download a driver from a link they host, or to turn off your antivirus, or to install something that "fixes all DSC problems". Do not. A crypto token driver should come from the token vendor or the certifying authority who issued your certificate, and nothing else should be touching a device that holds your legal signature. If you are not sure which vendor made your token, ask us and we will tell you from the token itself.

Companies and LLPs must sign with DSC. Proprietorships and partnerships can often use EVC, which is an OTP to the registered mobile, and that avoids this whole category of problem. If you are a proprietor fighting emSigner, ask us whether EVC is available to you.

The one from the GST portal itself, yes. Install it only from the official portal — there are lookalike downloads, and this is software with access to your signing token.

Usually a browser update resetting the trust for the local connection, or the helper not starting after a restart. Step two above is the first thing to redo.
