GeM Seller Registration

Government e-Marketplace is where central and state departments buy. Registering is free; being findable on it is the part that takes work.

Registration is the easy half

GeM registration itself costs nothing and can be completed online. That is why so many businesses register and then never sell anything through it — the assumption is that being listed is the achievement.

It is not. Buyers on GeM search a catalogue. If your products are not listed against the right categories with proper specifications, you are registered and invisible. The businesses that win orders are the ones that treated the catalogue as the real work and the registration as the paperwork.

The second thing worth knowing before you start: GeM sales are business with the government, and the compliance expectations that come with that are real. Your GST returns, your PAN status and your bank details all have to be current and consistent with each other.

What you need

  • PAN and the entity registration matching how you will sell — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company
  • GST registration, active and with returns filed
  • Bank account in the entity name, with details matching everything else exactly
  • Aadhaar or PAN of the authorised person for verification
  • MSME or Udyam registration if you have it — not mandatory, but it matters for the preferences government buyers give small suppliers
  • A DSC for certain actions on the portal

Where registrations stall

Almost always on a mismatch. The name on the bank account differs from the name on the PAN, or the GST registration carries a slightly different form of the business name, or the address on one document does not match another. GeM checks these against each other and stops.

Fixing a mismatch after registration is more work than getting it consistent first. If your GST certificate and your bank account do not read the same, sort that out before you begin.

Common questions

Registration itself, yes. There are charges associated with transacting on the platform, which vary by category. We will explain what applies to yours before you commit time to it.

Yes. Proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies can all register. The entity type affects the documents, not the eligibility.

No, resellers can sell too. But OEM status changes what you can list and how you are treated in some bids, and that distinction is worth understanding before you catalogue anything.

The form is quick. Getting the documents consistent is what takes time, and it is the part worth doing carefully.
