GST Registration in Bhopal: Threshold, Documents, Process and Common Rejections

By the Webdoid Technologies compliance team, Bhopal ·

GST registration issues a 15-digit GSTIN that legally authorises a business to collect GST and claim Input Tax Credit. In Bhopal it typically takes 3-5 working days from application, provided Aadhaar e-KYC is completed and the premises documents are consistent.

When registration actually becomes compulsory

Turnover thresholds are the best-known trigger, but they are not the only one, and businesses often discover the others late. Registration is mandatory regardless of turnover if you make inter-state supplies of goods, sell through an e-commerce operator, are liable under reverse charge, or act as an agent supplying on behalf of someone else.

There is also a commercial trigger that has nothing to do with law: your buyers. A B2B customer who cannot claim Input Tax Credit on your invoice will usually prefer a supplier who can give them one. Many small Bhopal businesses register voluntarily for exactly this reason, well before any threshold applies.

Documents, by entity type

The core list is the same for everyone - what changes is the constitution proof:

  • PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors
  • Passport-size photographs of the authorised signatories
  • Premises proof: the latest electricity bill, plus a rent agreement and owner's NOC if rented
  • Bank proof: a cancelled cheque or the first page of the bank passbook
  • An authorisation letter or board resolution naming the authorised signatory
  • Constitution proof: incorporation certificate for a company, the LLP agreement for an LLP, the partnership deed for a firm

From TRN to GSTIN

The application runs in two halves. Part A generates a Temporary Reference Number after basic PAN, mobile and email verification. Part B is the substantive filing - business details, HSN or SAC classification for what you sell, premises details, bank details and signatory information.

Aadhaar e-KYC authentication sits in the middle and is worth completing properly. Applications where Aadhaar authentication is completed are processed noticeably faster; skipping it commonly routes the file toward physical premises verification, which adds time.

The rejections we see most often

Almost every rejection or Form GST REG-03 query in practice comes from a small set of causes:

  • The address entered does not match the electricity bill exactly - a missing sector number or plot number is enough
  • A rent agreement without the owner's NOC, or an NOC signed by someone who is not the owner on the bill
  • HSN or SAC codes that do not match the described business activity
  • A blurred or partially cropped document upload
  • Failure to reply to a REG-03 notice within the reply window, after which the application lapses

The last one is worth emphasising. A REG-03 notice has a fixed reply period. Applicants who are not watching the portal frequently miss it entirely and have to start again from Part A.

Registration is the easy part - returns are the ongoing commitment

Once a GSTIN is issued, the filing calendar starts and does not stop, including for months with no sales. GSTR-1 for outward supplies is due by the 11th of the following month, GSTR-3B summary return by the 20th, and GSTR-9 annually. Eligible small taxpayers can opt into the QRMP scheme and file quarterly.

Nil returns still have to be filed. Late fees accrue per day per return and compound quietly across months, which is how a dormant registration ends up owing more than the business earned.

Frequently asked questions

Usually 3-5 working days from submission when Aadhaar e-KYC is completed and premises documents are consistent. A departmental query under Form GST REG-03 adds time depending on how quickly it is answered.

It is mandatory once you cross the turnover threshold, or immediately - regardless of turnover - if you supply inter-state, sell through an e-commerce operator, or are liable under reverse charge.

An address mismatch between the entered premises and the electricity bill, or a rent agreement submitted without a valid owner's NOC.

Yes. Nil returns must still be filed. Late fees accrue per day per return even when there is no tax to pay.

Yes. A residential address can be used as the principal place of business if you provide the electricity bill and, where applicable, a rent agreement and owner's NOC.

It is the notice a tax officer issues asking for clarification or additional documents. It carries a fixed reply window, and an unanswered notice causes the application to lapse.
