Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM)
Normally the supplier collects GST and pays it. Under reverse charge the buyer pays it directly - and businesses that do not know this is happening under-report.
What reverse charge actually does
Under the normal mechanism, your supplier charges you GST on their invoice and pays it to the government. Under reverse charge, the supplier does not charge it — you pay it directly, on their behalf.
The government uses this where collecting from the supplier is difficult: certain services, some supplies from unregistered persons, specific notified categories. Security services provided to a registered business is one of the categories that commonly catches people out, because the invoice arrives without GST and nothing looks unusual.
The two failures are opposite and both cost money. Not paying RCM when it applies is under-reporting, with interest. Paying it and then not claiming the credit you are entitled to is simply money left behind.
What to actually do about it
- Identify which of your purchases attract RCM. Look at the invoice: if a service invoice arrives with no GST charged and the supplier is not composition or exempt, ask why.
- Pay it in cash, not by adjusting credit. RCM liability generally has to be discharged in cash rather than set off against input credit.
- Then claim the credit where you are eligible. This is the step that gets forgotten, and forgetting it means you paid tax you did not have to bear.
- Self-invoice where required for supplies from unregistered persons.
- Report it correctly in the return — RCM has its own fields and putting it in the wrong place creates a mismatch.

Why this is worth checking once, properly
RCM is not something that comes up every day, which is exactly why businesses get it wrong quietly for years. A single review of what you actually buy will tell you whether it applies to you, and that answer stays useful.
The categories change from time to time by notification. If your last check was a few years ago, it is worth repeating.
