Choosing an ISO Certification Body

Not every ISO certificate is accepted where it matters. The difference is accreditation, and it is the thing cheap certificates leave out.

Why the cheap certificate is a false economy

ISO certificates are issued by certification bodies, and those bodies are themselves accredited — or not. An accredited body has been assessed against international requirements by an accreditation authority. A non-accredited one has assessed itself.

Both can print a certificate that looks similar. The difference appears at the moment it matters: a tender that requires accredited certification, or a customer whose supplier onboarding checks the accreditation. At that point a non-accredited certificate is worth nothing, and you certify again properly, having paid twice.

We have seen contractors discover this at bid evaluation. It is a bad moment to find out.

How to check before you buy

  • Ask which accreditation body the certification body holds. A straight answer is a good sign; a vague one is not.
  • Verify it independently rather than taking the certificate's word for it. Accreditation bodies publish who they accredit.
  • Check what the tender or customer actually requires. Some specify accredited certification explicitly. Read it before choosing a body.
  • Be sceptical of instant certification. Genuine certification involves an audit of what you actually do. A certificate issued in days without an audit is exactly the certificate that fails verification.
  • Remember surveillance audits. Real certification continues; the body comes back. A body that never returns was not doing much in the first place.

Our position on this

We work with accredited certification bodies and we will tell you what the audit involves before you commit, including the parts that need work at your end. Certification is not a document we hand over — the auditor looks at what your business actually does.

If you want a certificate without an audit, we are not the right people, and we would rather say that than take the work. It would fail the first time someone checked.

Common questions

It may still be checked at evaluation, and a customer may check later even if the tender did not say. Given that certification is a multi-year investment, doing it properly once is the cheaper path.

Usually accreditation, audit depth, or both. Ask them which accreditation body they hold and verify it. If the answer is unclear, that is your answer.

It depends on how much of your process is already documented. A business already working to a standard is quicker than one starting from nothing. What it is not is instant.

The body returns periodically to confirm you are still doing what you were certified for. See our page on surveillance audits.
