Can I just stop filing GST returns?

No. Returns remain due and late fees accrue per day per return until the registration is formally cancelled.

Is a final return needed after cancellation?

Yes. A final return is due after cancellation, and missing it leaves the matter open even though the registration has ended.

Can I cancel with pending returns?

Pending returns generally have to be filed before cancellation is accepted, so clearing them is part of the process.

Why applications get abandoned

Almost always the same way. The application was filed, sometimes by the business itself and sometimes through someone who moved on. The examination report was issued to the registered email and agent. Nobody was watching. Thirty days passed.

By the time the applicant notices — often when they try to use the mark or check on it a year later — the application is abandoned and the work and fee are gone.

The fix is trivial and it is a calendar reminder: check the status every couple of months until it is registered. Two minutes, four times a year.
