Yes. A final return is due after cancellation, and missing it leaves the matter open even though the registration has ended.

What a search is actually looking for

Not just an identical name. Examiners and opponents look at whether marks are deceptively similar — close enough that customers could confuse them. That covers similar spellings, similar sounds, and similar meanings, which is why searching only for your exact name misses most of the risk.

A search also looks across the classes you intend to file in and the ones adjacent to them, because a conflict in a related field matters more than one in an unrelated one.

What it saves you

The filing fee, which is not refundable when an application is refused.
Months. An objection adds a reply, possibly a hearing, and a great deal of waiting.
The cost of rebranding late. The worst case is not a refused application — it is having built a brand for two years and then losing the name.

An honest note on what a search can and cannot tell you

A search shows what is on the register and what has been applied for. It cannot tell you what someone will file next week, and it cannot guarantee an examiner's view — examiners exercise judgement and reasonable people differ.

What it does is move you from guessing to knowing the landscape. Anyone who guarantees registration after a search is overselling, and we will not.

The public search is available and it is worth doing. What it does not do easily is catch phonetic and conceptual similarity, which is where most objections come from.

Sometimes, depending on how close it is, whether the fields overlap, and how your mark is presented. A search that finds something is doing its job — it lets you decide with information.
