Encryption, and why price bids fail without it

Auction and tender portals usually encrypt the price component so nobody — including the portal operator — can read it before opening. That encryption uses a second certificate, and a signing-only certificate cannot do it.

The failure looks confusing when it happens: the technical part uploads fine and the price bid refuses, often with an unhelpful message. Bidders assume the portal is down. It is usually a Class 3 signing certificate being asked to do a job it was not issued for.

So when buying a certificate for auctions or tenders, get the combined signing and encryption pair rather than signing alone. The difference in cost is small; the difference on auction day is the whole lot.
