GST Portal Login and OTP Errors
The GST portal produces some unhelpful error messages. Most of them mean something specific and most are fixable in a few minutes.
What the common ones mean
- “Your session is expired” or a permission message — usually stale cookies or multiple tabs logged into different accounts. Clear the site data, use one tab, log in fresh. It rarely means anything is wrong with your account.
- OTP not arriving — check which mobile and email are on the registration, not which ones you use today. If the registered contact belongs to a former accountant or an old number, that is the actual problem and it needs a registration amendment to fix.
- OTP arriving but rejected — usually an expired one. They are short-lived; request a fresh one rather than retyping.
- Cannot access a return period — often an earlier period is unfiled and blocking it. Returns generally have to be filed in order.
- DSC not working at signing — that is the emSigner helper rather than the portal. See our page on emSigner problems.
The one worth fixing properly
The registered mobile and email are the single most common cause of being locked out, and the one people live with for years. If your registration still carries a previous accountant's number, every OTP goes to them — and if that relationship ends badly, you are locked out of your own registration.
Changing them is a registration amendment. It takes a little effort and it removes a real dependency. If your OTPs are going somewhere you do not control, fix that before you need to file something urgently.

Before you assume the portal is down
Try a different browser, and try without extensions. A good share of what looks like a portal fault is a browser state problem on one machine. If it works elsewhere, it is your machine rather than the portal.
Around filing deadlines the portal genuinely does slow down under load. That is a reason to file earlier in the period rather than on the last day, not a reason to keep retrying at 11pm on the due date.
