What happened to Class 2

India used to issue digital signature certificates in classes, with Class 2 used for routine filings and Class 3 for tenders and higher-assurance uses. Class 2 was discontinued and Class 3 became the standard for everything.

The practical effect is simple. If you are looking to buy a Class 2 certificate, you cannot — and you do not need to, because Class 3 covers everything Class 2 did. If a website is still offering you a Class 2 certificate today, that is a reason to be careful about who you are buying from.

If you are holding an old Class 2 certificate, it works until it expires and then you replace it with Class 3. There is nothing to do in the meantime.
