Can I just stop filing GST returns?

No. Returns remain due and late fees accrue per day per return until the registration is formally cancelled.

Is a final return needed after cancellation?

Yes. A final return is due after cancellation, and missing it leaves the matter open even though the registration has ended.

Can I cancel with pending returns?

Pending returns generally have to be filed before cancellation is accepted, so clearing them is part of the process.

Customs filing is signed, and the certificate has to match the entity registered on ICEGATE exactly.

Why the name match matters more here

Customs filing sits at the point where goods are physically waiting. A signature that will not register is not an administrative delay — it is a consignment held while somebody sorts it out, with the costs that come with that.

The certificate has to correspond to the entity registered on ICEGATE, which in turn has to correspond to your IEC. Three records that must agree, and any mismatch surfaces at the worst possible moment.

Check them against each other before your first consignment, not during it.

A Class 3 certificate in the correct name for the registered entity
ICEGATE registration completed and the certificate mapped to it
Validity that outlasts your shipping calendar — an expiry during a consignment is expensive
Your broker's position if one files for you, so it is clear whose certificate is used

Registration on ICEGATE is its own step

Holding a certificate does not give you access. ICEGATE registration is a separate process in which the certificate is mapped to the IEC holder and the authorised person, and until that mapping exists nothing you sign will be accepted.

Where a customs broker files on your behalf, they use their own certificate under their own licence. That is a different arrangement from filing yourself, and importers sometimes buy a certificate they do not use because their broker was always going to sign anyway. Ask who files before you buy.

If you do file yourself, keep the certificate’s validity ahead of your shipment schedule. A consignment sitting at a port while a certificate is reissued is an expensive way to learn the expiry date. See our page on checking validity and our IEC code page.
