Can I just stop filing GST returns?

No. Returns remain due and late fees accrue per day per return until the registration is formally cancelled.

Is a final return needed after cancellation?

Yes. A final return is due after cancellation, and missing it leaves the matter open even though the registration has ended.

Can I cancel with pending returns?

Pending returns generally have to be filed before cancellation is accepted, so clearing them is part of the process.

The class you hold decides the value of work you can bid for. Applying for the wrong one wastes a cycle.

What the class actually controls

Registration is granted in a class, and the class sets a ceiling on the value of work you may tender for in that department. Below the ceiling you compete; above it your bid is not eligible however good it is.

So the class is not a badge. It is the gate, and choosing it is a commercial decision: a higher class needs more turnover, more equipment and more demonstrated work, and applying without those is a rejection rather than a stretch.

Classes and their limits are set by the department and revised from time to time. Check the current position for your department before applying — we do that as part of the work rather than quoting a figure that may have moved.

What each class is tested on

Financial standing — turnover and a solvency certificate from your bank, at the level the class requires. See our page on solvency certificates.
Completed work — certificates for work of comparable value and type, which is what usually limits a new firm.
Technical staff — qualified engineers on the rolls, with proof.
Machinery — owned or leased, evidenced.
Registration and tax standing — GST, PAN, EPF and labour registrations current.

Choosing which class to apply for

The common mistake is applying for the class you want rather than the class your documents support. A rejection costs the cycle and sometimes the fee, and you apply again anyway at the lower class.
